Review

In the sweltering summer of 2001, American Outlaws rode into town like a band of wild west desperados. The film, directed by Les Mayfield and starring Colin Farrell, Gabriel Macht, and Scott Caan, tells the tale of a group of young outlaws who become folk heroes in 19th century Kansas. But does this shoot-’em-up flick hit its mark or is it just shooting blanks?

The plot centers around Jesse James (Farrell) and his gang as they rob trains and banks, always staying one step ahead of the law. Their daring feats capture the imagination of the people, and soon they’re elevated to mythic status. But when a corrupt railroad baron (Harris Yulin) puts a bounty on their heads, the gang must fight for their lives against not only his hired gunslingers but also those who once idolized them.

The film’s storyline is certainly compelling enough – it’s a classic tale of good vs. evil with plenty of action to boot. But where American Outlaws falls short is in its execution. While the cast is talented enough, they’re not given much to work with character-wise. James’ love interest (Ali Larter) is little more than eye candy, and Caan’s character doesn’t get much development beyond being the wisecracking sidekick.

But perhaps more frustrating than any one character’s lack of depth is the movie’s overall lack of historical accuracy. While it bills itself as based on true events, American Outlaws takes quite a few liberties with history – most notably in its portrayal of Jesse James as a benevolent outlaw rather than a cold-blooded killer.

However, despite these flaws American Outlaws still manages to be an enjoyable romp through cowboy country thanks in no small part to its impressive production values. The cinematography captures the sweeping vistas and dusty towns that make up the mythos of western films, and the score by Trevor Rabin delivers plenty of pulse-pounding moments.

But perhaps the most surprising aspect of the film is just how much fun it is to watch. While it may fall short in terms of historical accuracy or character development, American Outlaws never takes itself too seriously. One memorable scene sees James and his gang holding up a train while dressed in women’s clothing – a bit of silly fun that perfectly captures the film’s lighthearted approach.

Of course, not everyone was charmed by this approach. The film received mixed reviews from critics upon release, with many criticizing its lack of originality and adherence to western tropes. However, audiences seemed to respond well enough – American Outlaws grossed $13 million worldwide against a $35 million budget.

So what can we make of American Outlaws all these years later? Is it a classic western or just a forgettable romp through cowboy country? Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in between – a flawed but entertaining film that still manages to capture the spirit of the wild west.

In the end, it may be best to heed the words of Jesse James himself: “Some people are born to be outlaws.” And while American Outlaws may not be perfect, it’s certainly worth saddling up for one last ride.
