It’s Complicated: A Masterpiece of Romantic Comedy

As a social psychologist, I have always been fascinated by the power of persuasion in films. One of the movies that caught my attention is the 2009 romantic comedy, “It’s Complicated.” Directed by Nancy Meyers, this movie boasts a brilliant cast, an engaging storyline, and witty dialogue that makes it a must-watch.

The plot revolves around Jane Adler (Meryl Streep), a divorced mother of three who owns a successful bakery and is on good terms with her ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin). They are forced to reunite when they attend their son’s college graduation in New York. The reunion leads to an unexpected affair that rekindles old feelings and makes Jane question her decision to stay single.

Complicating matters further is Adam (Steve Martin), Jane’s architect who starts to show interest in her. Torn between two men, Jane must choose between her past and present life while navigating the challenges that come with age.

The storyline is relatable to many women who have gone through divorce or separation. It touches on themes such as forgiveness, trust, second chances, and self-discovery. Watching Jane struggle with making a decision adds depth to her character, and you can’t help but root for her.

What sets this film apart from others in its genre is the caliber of actors involved. Meryl Streep gives an outstanding performance as the lead actress. Her ability to convey emotions effortlessly without being overly dramatic is nothing short of impressive.

Alec Baldwin also delivers a remarkable portrayal of his character Jake. He captures the essence of a middle-aged man trying to hold onto his youth by dating someone half his age hilariously. His comedic timing is spot on and adds much-needed humor to the movie.

Steve Martin completes the trinity of excellence with his portrayal of Adam. His character brings much-needed balance to the movie by being the voice of reason when the other two leads are caught up in their feelings.

The movie’s popularity is evident by its $220 million box office revenue. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The music score by Hans Zimmer is enchanting and adds to the overall experience of watching the movie.

Filming took place in various locations, including California and New York, which give the movie a distinct vibe. The cinematography captures vivid colors and stunning landscapes that add to the movie’s charm.

The dialogue between characters is witty and engaging, making it easy to get hooked on their conversations. One of my favorite scenes involves Jane, Jake, and Agness (Jake’s new wife) discussing their sexual activities, and it ends with them all laughing uncontrollably.

Despite its critical acclaim, the movie has faced criticism for promoting infidelity. However, I believe it showcases a realistic portrayal of how complex relationships can be after divorce or separation. It also suggests that sometimes people are better off alone than settling.

Overall, “It’s Complicated” is an excellent romantic comedy that leaves you feeling good about life. The film’s expertly crafted plotline and exceptional performances make it a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a good rom-com. Meyers has outdone herself with this cinematic masterpiece that will undoubtedly make you laugh, cry, and feel good inside.
