Review

Deep in the heart of Africa lies a tale of greed, corruption, and turmoil that would transform the lives of people living on the continent in unimaginable ways. Blood Diamond, a movie directed by Edward Zwick, captures these themes and more in a compelling story that leaves viewers both entertained and awed by the depth of human depravity.

The storyline is set amidst the Sierra Leone Civil War that ran from 1991 to 2002. The film follows an ex-mercenary named Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) who teams up with Mende fisherman Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) to find a rare pink diamond that can buy his way out of Africa and ensure his future financial security.

Soon enough, their quest turns into a race against time when they discover that others are also after the diamond, including ruthless diamond smuggler Colonel Coetzee (Arnold Vosloo). The trio must navigate treacherous terrain and political strife to stay alive as they pursue their goal. But at what cost?

The plot is rife with intrigue as it exposes how diamonds have been fueling civil wars across Africa for decades in a phenomenon known as ‘conflict diamonds’. These blood diamonds are mined by slaves or children soldiers who risk their lives to fetch them from mines controlled by rebel groups. Archer’s character embodies this reality as he traffics illicit gems to finance arms deals for African warlords.

It’s difficult not to empathize with Solomon’s character, whose family was taken captive by rebels until he discovered the prized diamond, which would give him leverage for their release. He’s torn between wanting to save his kinfolk and saving himself.

One striking fact about Blood Diamond is its historical accuracy. As much as it’s an action-packed adventure movie, it draws from true events that happened during Sierra Leone’s brutal 11-year civil war where over 50,000 people were killed, and countless others were displaced.

The director sought to capture not only the conflict but the importance of individual choices in determining the course of history. As he aptly puts it, “every time somebody buys those diamonds, they’re contributing to the suffering of people in Africa.” In one quote from Archer’s character, he declares that “In America it’s call a ‘conflict diamond’, but here it’s just a diamond.” This line sums up the double standards that have long characterized Western attitudes towards African tragedies.

The acting in Blood Diamond is top-notch, with DiCaprio putting up a commanding performance as an anti-hero struggling to escape his past mistakes. Hounsou also shines as a father seeking to reunite with his family while confronting the ugly side of humanity head-on.

It’s interesting to note that some actors who played minor roles in the film would later go on to become stars in their own right, such as Jennifer Connelly and Stephen Collins.

The movie score by James Newton Howard is hauntingly beautiful, capturing both the emotion and tension of each scene. As much as it isn’t easy listening, it transports viewers into this world rife with danger and uncertainty.

Blood Diamond has remained resonant even years after its release. It was nominated for five Academy Awards in 2007 but didn’t win any. But that doesn’t take away from its impact on raising awareness about Africa’s plight. The film was also praised for its cinematography and editing, which expertly showcase Sierra Leone’s beauty amid chaos.

Viewers’ opinions have been diverse, with some praising its message and others criticizing Hollywood for exploiting African realities without proposing real solutions. But regardless of these views, Blood Diamond is a must-watch movie that will leave you breathless and questioning what you can do to make a difference in this world.

From casting controversies (the late Djimon Hounsou was originally cast as Danny Archer) to insider gossip about off-screen life, Blood Diamond continues to provoke debate and discussion. But one thing is for sure: it’s a well-crafted film with a profound message that transcends time.
