There are some movies that leave an impression on you, the kind of impression that lingers long after you’ve left the cinema. The Words is one such movie. Directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, this film tells a story that captures your heart and mind, and takes you on an emotional journey.
The storyline of The Words is a unique one. It follows the life of a young writer named Rory Jansen, played by Bradley Cooper who has always dreamt of becoming a successful author. Rory struggles to get his work published until he stumbles upon an old manuscript in a vintage satchel while on honeymoon with his wife. In a moment of temptation, Rory plagiarizes the work and passes it off as his own, only to later find out that its real author is still alive.
The plot in itself is intriguing; however, it’s the way in which it’s executed that sets this movie apart from others. It’s cleverly written with an intricate storyline containing multi-layered flashbacks and time hops. This creates a sense of mystery and suspense throughout the movie as we try to piece together what happened to the original manuscript owner.
Bradley Cooper’s acting skills are put to great use in this film as he takes on different personas as Rory at different stages of his life. The supporting cast also brings their A-game with Jeremy Irons portraying The Old Man, Dennis Quaid as Clay Hammond, Olivia Wilde as Daniella and Zoe Saldana playing Celia, Rory’s supportive wife.
One scene stands out where The Old Man delivers a raw dialogue about being bitter about something for so long that it became part of him saying “At a certain point you stop fighting and start living with it.” This quote resonates throughout the film making the audience ponder on their own personal regrets and mistakes.
The film score also plays an essential role in enhancing the emotional impact of several scenes. Marcelo Zarvos’ original music is beautifully executed and enhances the overall storytelling experience.
